Harrow Elects First Muslim Mayor
The Mayor Making ceremony and annual meeting of the council was very interesting last night. The outgoing Mayor was Mr Eric Silver who spoke about the past year in office and was thanked by colleagues. The incoming Mayor was Councillor Asad Omar who was unanimously voted in and praised by other Councillors. It was good to see cross party support for the new Mayor from the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats, as representatives from all three parties spoke to support the nomination.
Councillor Asad Omar accepted the position of Mayor and dedicated the Mayoralty and named as the Mayoress his late wife who he said served as an inspiration to him.
As reported by The Harrow Times, Cllr Omar becomes Harrow's first Muslim Mayor and has named his theme for the forthcoming year as diversity and delivered an inspiring speech which reminded his audience that whatever party they represent they had been elected by the people of Harrow and it is their duty to serve their electorates.
